Story time Sunday 1

Today is one of those days where you simply wish to smoke the peace pipe and sway back and forth. Well, that's how I feel right now. I'm currently listening to some real chill music on pandora and wishing I could just lay on the grass and make shapes with the clouds. I'm not sure anything could put me in a foul mood. I'm so relaxed and ready for anything. I'm even at work which makes this even weirder. If anyone had anything that they needed to get off of their chest, today would be the day to do it.

A lot of people have asked me how Melissa and I met. Today being Story time Sunday, I'm going to tell all of you the story of how we met and got married. First a little back story.

I remember praying daily that, God willing, I'd be able to attend USU(Utah State University). It was one of two schools that had yet to close their enrollment for fall semester 2007, and I didn't want to go to the other institution. When I received my acceptance letter in the mail I was extremely happy. It meant one of two things. First, I was actually going school. I wanted to be a doctor. It had been my dream to go to medical school for a few years and it was finally coming into fruition. Second, I didn't have to attend the other school that I had been dreading the thought of going to. The first month I was living in Logan(the city not my friend in NM), I found a job at Lee's Marketplace. It consumed my life, and needless to say, I didn't do very well in school. I also became so sick during my first year of school that it was hard for me to crawl out of bed in the morning. If it hadn't been for my friend Brady, I'm pretty sure I would have flunked out of all of my classes. I also wanted to quit my job more than than I needed air to breathe, but something kept me there. At the end of the school year I had the option of transfering down to the Lee's Marketplace in North Ogden or quitting. I knew that I would need a job during the summer so I transfered. This was the summer that I met my future wife, Melissa. I was the cashier on check stand one and she was the cashier on check stand two. Our relationship didn't bloom on the spot. We went on a few dates that summer but I had my sights set on another girl that we worked with. When Melissa left for school I kept in close contact with her; I also kept in contact with the other girl. In October of 2008, Melissa heard some very false rumors that were being spewed from the lips of the other girl about me, and told me never to speak to her again. I later found out that these rumours were a ploy to "get Melissa out of the picture". I explained myself to Melissa and our relationship busted out of the seams. We were engaged within a few months and were married on July 11, 2010.

fishing books

Melissa, my brother, and I went fishing today and had a lot of fun. Sadly, we forgot the camera so the lack of pictures will follow this post. It was the first time Melissa had been fishing since she was 8 and the first time I'd been since 2004. It's needless to say that we were both a little rusty. I spent half of the time re-teaching Melissa how to cast out into the water without the lure grabbing tightly to a tree and working out knots that seemed to find their way into her line. The other half of the time was spent trying to work out my own problems. It seemed that the farther the rooster tail flew the more snags I received in my reel. Other all it was a fun morning and although none of us caught anything I can still say it was a success. Melissa eventually learned to cast out into the water.

I've read a lot of books this summer. When my Melissa and I were married I adopted a lot of books. These books came in all shapes and sizes. They took on many faces and many styles. It started last summer when I thought that reading 4 books before school started was an amazing feat. Now, it's barely reaching the midsummer solstice and I've already added double the amount of books to my knowledge bank than I did last year. I'm planning on reading a lot more before the summer is out and I have to start reading what an institution wants me to read again. Here is a list of the books I want to read:

**This idea came to me from a friend who did the same thing. Elise you have all of the bright ideas**

I've read the first two but haven't finished them. I want to know what everyone finds so fascinating about these books. Although, I will admit to finding them somewhat entertaining, I wouldn't yet say that I'm a fan.

This is the third book in a trilogy. I'm almost done and I can feel the end drawing near. I recently finished the second book in the series but decided that I needed a break. when I started reading this one I didn't find myself drawn to the characters as I was in the beginning. It's an amazing read if you're into fantasy.

I oftentimes find myself browsing the internet for a good book to read. I stumbled on this out-of-print alternate history novel while I was looking at a website about my favorite author. It tells the story of a couple of Nazi hunters who find Hilter hiding in the middle of the jungle in South America in 1977.

This lightread series of books stole my imagination when I first opened the book. If you can't read the fuzzy title it's called Leven Thumps. It's oddly interesting and actually leaves you wanting to keep reading. I've read the first book and need to finish the series.
I've read the first one. I know how the lamp, and the witch came to be in Narnia. I even know how the old professor that appears in The lion, witch, and the Wardrobe knows about Narnia. I just don't know how it ends or what lies after the first and second book.

Yellowtana

Melissa and I went up to Montana a couple of weeks ago to visit some friends of mine. They are an older couple who uprooted what they had in Puerto Rico and moved to the "big sky state". We hit a lot of stormy weather on the way and had to make a few sudden stops so that my Melissa could throw-up. It was a great trip but towards the end we were both worn out and tired and read to be at home. We hit up Yellowstone and saw a lot of geysers, burnt trees, and buffalo.

We found some lave trails so naturally I had to step in the lava.

Melissa needed to take a break and unload what was in her stomach. I was more than happy to take a picture.

This mangled deer was seen walking through the north entrance of the park. It needed a nice grooming and fast.

It was below freezing when we went. I think I was the only one in the whole park wearing shorts. I couldn't feel my legs at the end of the day.

We saw more buffalo than any other animal. This one was seen early scratching his butt on a tree.

Trees still grow even in the middle of a geyser. This one might appear to be dead but I'm sure it's just sleeping.

The never thought...

My life has always been full of surprises. When I was 7 years old my grandma asked me to help her pull weeds in her garden. I told her no, turned around and ran away. I didn't like pulling weeds and I was definitely not going to pull them in my grandma's garden. It caught me by total surprise when she caught me by the top of my head and pulled me back the garden by my hair. An old lady, and at that age someone who I thought was ancient, caught up with me! ME! A young cheetah! Needless to say I had to re-vamp my ideas of a quick scheme to get out of work. When I was 17 years old I got a full-ride scholarship to attend culinary arts school. It was a dream come true. I loved it until I started doing it. I determined at that moment that cooking for me was so much a passion that if I did it for a living I'd end up hating it. When I was 20 years old a doctor in Puerto Rico told me that I had something lodged in my brain and then insisted that I would have to have it removed. He said that he didn't know what it was but he was sure it was the reason that I was having a migraine everyday. He went on to scare the living crap out of me by telling me that it was serious enough to be sent home to Utah immediately. It turned out that the "something" that was lodged in the back of my brain was a cyst and wasn't cause for concern. It's still there and as far as I know is still the size of an egg. It rest peacefully next to my brain and the bone in the back of my head. But, not even my grandma catching up to me that day compares to the following story.

3 months ago Melissa had a miscarriage. It had been her second one in less than 4 months and needless to say, we were distraught. We had determined after that moment that we were going to wait to have a baby for a while. Melissa needed to heal and we needed to have a little more us time. Plus, we didn't want to have another surprise like we had just had the last 2 times. 6 weeks later Melissa started getting sick. She had a lot of symptoms associated with the flu so we weren't too worried about it. After a few days however, she started getting worse. We called her OBGYN and she said, as we thought, that there was a flu bug going around but since we were worried we could take a pregnancy test. After three positive answers we called the doctor back and were told to come in for some blood work. Within two hours of the blood work Melissa got a call telling her that she needed to come in ASAP for an ultrasound. The doctor was worried about the results of her test and she needed to see what was going on. The next morning we went in for the test, anxious for what was about to happen. After a careful, and very careful test, we found out that Melissa was exactly 6 weeks pregnant. We were blown away. How could she possibly be pregnant? She had just had a miscarriage 6 weeks prior. It was a completely different pregnancy and had somehow survived the miscarriage. We asked the doctor and she didn't know. When we went in for our first official appointment all she was able to tell us was that things like this just happen. Our baby is now 12 weeks. He/she is healthy and strong. Baby Sorensen is due on December 25th and has to be the biggest surprise of my life.

Happy Mother's Day!

I know! I know! It's coming a little late but you have to give me some credit. My family decided that they weren't going to celebrate Mother's day this year until today, May 16th, because my father decided last weekend was the time for him to gallivanting about over in Taiwan. He was gone almost a week, which meant today was the day that we were to celebrate El dia de las Madres. Oh, and what a wonderful day it is, as well. Today was the final day I had to wake up in Melissa's Grandparents house and have my nose be offended by the smell of an old and hair ball shedding animal. Today was the day that I was able to go home and enjoy a hot shower in a clean apartment that's clutter-free and OCD friendly. Today is also the day that I get to spend time with my wonderful wife and my wonderful mother. That is, when she gets off of work!

This blog of mine is dedicated to two people. These two people have helped in more ways than Melissa and I will ever be able to recount. It is by, and through, these two individuals that Melissa and I were brought to the point that we are in, today. Today, this post is dedicated to two wonderful mothers who raised us right!

My mother, Michelle Sorensen, never thought she did a perfect job at raising her children. Now that we're older she seems to chastise herself constantly about all of the mistakes that she made while we were growing up. My mom is a wonderful lady. She has been there for me when I wasn't able to be there for myself. She was my confidant and my go to person when I needed someone to talk with and needed someone to give me advice. It is true that my mom and I haven't always seen eye to eye, but we've always made sure that we patched things up. I've always been, and always will be, a momma's boy. I love my mom more than she'll ever realize and owe her more than she'll ever know. She was the one person, at times, who was able to keep me going when I wanted to quit and keep me motivated when I wanted to stop. My mother has an incredible capacity to love. She has the tenderest heart and a tremendous gift to give. She would give everything she owned away if it meant that someone would be as lucky as she is. She is amazing and I will cherish what she has done for me for the rest of my life.

My second mother, Kathleen Day, who is Melissa's mom, is a sensational person. When I look at her and how she raised her daughter I am in complete gratitude. She is one amazing woman, and has to be, to have raised such an amazing daughter. She is my mother-in-law but I don't feel that distant relationship with her. She is a second mother to me. She is so easy to talk with and is so open to listening. She has an incredible gift to give the most perfect advice, which stems from her years of experience. She knows how to make everyone feel like they're at home and that they belong. When you walk into her home she embraces you like you're one of her own and you can't help but to feel loved. She loves so easily and has an amazing power to see the good in everything. She cares so much about her family, which is something that she has instilled upon her daughter. Melissa and I would have had a much harder time dealing with issues these past few months if it hadn't been for the love, care, and support of a mom like her. She is an incredible woman who I'm so glad to call my mom.

Pink bellies and parties

The other night my friend texted me and told me how much she missed a few things in her life. I was taken back by it and didn't know how to respond. As I sat thinking about her text, not knowing what to say, a thought came into my head. I don't miss anything from my past. A few months ago (meaning before I got married), I thrived on the company of my friends. When I was with them I felt like I could do anything. I remembered all of the fun we had together and when we weren't doing something I felt a void. I was constantly trying to find things to do so we wouldn't have to have that feeling of "blah". When some of my friends moved away or went on missions I felt lonely and missed the times we had. I missed the experiences and felt a hole in my adventure box (yes I have an adventure box). Now that I'm married that void is gone. As I sat there after my friend had texted me I realized just how complete my life is now. I love my friends dearly and most of them have changed my life. I wouldn't be where I am today without Spring break 2008 or drinking parties but it seems that the only person who fills that void for me now is Melissa. She completes me in ways that my friends never did. Without her I'd still be searching for something to fill the gap left from past experiences.

That being said though, I still need my friends. I need Jackie's "hot pockets" and Brady's "pink bellies". I need the memory of Spring break 2008 and me being a PMSing polygamist. I need Madison telling me how unhealthy things are then turning around and eating frozen burritos. I need friends like Katie who has been there for me since 1st grade and Brady C. who knows the inner workings of a stick-lax and dirt clods! I need Trevor to constantly tell me that we need to make enchiladas and Christine to tell say that my writings make her laugh. I have so many friends that have changed my life. They have been there for me when the sun wasn't shining for me and when I couldn't see past the tip of my nose. They've all made me laugh and made me feel like I was the coolest person in the world. Melissa owes a lot to all of my friends. It was their friendship that made me who I am today. I don't know where I'd be if it hadn't been for them. Thank you!
